Plot Summary

The film begins with a narration by Charlton Heston, explaining that 65 million years ago, a giant asteroid hit the Earth and caused the extinction of the dinosaurs. He warns that the same thing could happen again.

In the present day, NASA detects a Texas-sized asteroid named XR-4C that is heading towards Earth and will impact in 18 days, causing global devastation. NASA director Dan Truman (Billy Bob Thornton) recruits Harry Stamper (Bruce Willis), the world's best deep-sea oil driller, and his team of roughnecks to help them drill into the asteroid and plant a nuclear bomb that will split it in two and divert it away from Earth.

Harry agrees to help on the condition that he can bring his own team, which includes his daughter Grace's (Liv Tyler) boyfriend A.J. Frost (Ben Affleck), who Harry dislikes. Harry and his team undergo a crash course in astronaut training and are launched into space on two shuttles, Freedom and Independence. They dock with a Russian space station to refuel and meet Lev Andropov (Peter Stormare), a cosmonaut who joins them.

The shuttles reach the asteroid and attempt to land on a flat surface, but they encounter a meteor shower that damages both shuttles and kills some of the crew members. Independence crashes on the asteroid, while Freedom manages to land but misses the target site by 26 miles. Harry and his team use their specially designed drilling vehicle, Armadillo, to reach the target site. However, they discover that the asteroid is made of hard iron and their drill bits keep breaking.

Meanwhile, Truman learns that the bomb's remote detonator is broken and that someone will have to stay behind and detonate it manually. He decides not to tell Harry and his team until they finish drilling. He also learns that the asteroid has a fault line running through it that could split it after the explosion and still hit Earth.

Harry's team manages to drill to 800 feet, but they are attacked by a rogue military unit led by Colonel Willie Sharp (William Fichtner), who tries to take over the mission and detonate the bomb prematurely. Harry fights back and convinces Sharp to let him finish drilling. However, they lose contact with NASA due to interference from the asteroid's magnetic field.

Harry reaches 2,000 feet but encounters another obstacle: a huge gas pocket that blows out their drill bit and Armadillo. Harry decides to use a spare Armadillo from Independence's wreckage to finish drilling. He sends A.J. and Lev to retrieve it, while he stays behind with Chick (Will Patton) and Rockhound (Steve Buscemi). A.J. and Lev find Independence's survivors: Oscar (Owen Wilson), Max (Ken Campbell), and Bear (Michael Clarke Duncan). They also find another Armadillo but it is damaged.

A.J. repairs the Armadillo and drives it back to Harry's location. However, he is pursued by a massive rock storm that destroys most of the asteroid's surface. A.J. manages to reach Harry but loses contact with Lev, Oscar, Max, and Bear. Harry resumes drilling with the new Armadillo but realizes that they are running out of time.

Truman finally tells Harry about the detonator problem and asks him to draw straws to decide who will stay behind. Harry agrees but secretly rigs the draw so that he will be the one to stay behind. He tells A.J. that he loves him like a son and gives him his patch. He also tells Grace that he loves her and that A.J. will take care of her.

A.J. and the others leave the asteroid on Freedom and head back to Earth. Harry lowers the bomb into the hole and activates it. He then contacts Truman and tells him to set off the bomb when he sees a green light. He also tells him to take care of his daughter and his team.

Harry looks at a picture of Grace and says goodbye to her. He then sees the green light and pushes the button, detonating the bomb. The asteroid splits in two and the halves fly past Earth, creating a spectacular light show in the sky. The world celebrates the victory, while Grace and A.J. embrace each other.

Review

Armageddon is a thrilling and entertaining film that delivers on its promise of spectacle and action. The film boasts impressive visual effects, a rousing score by Trevor Rabin, and a star-studded cast that brings charisma and humor to their roles. The film also has some emotional moments, especially between Harry and Grace, and Harry and A.J.

However, the film also has some flaws, such as its implausible premise, its scientific inaccuracies, its clichéd characters, its cheesy dialogue, and its excessive patriotism. The film also suffers from a lack of depth and originality, as it borrows heavily from other disaster films such as Deep Impact, Apollo 13, and The Right Stuff.

Overall, Armageddon is a fun and enjoyable film that does not take itself too seriously and delivers what it sets out to do: entertain the audience with a high-octane adventure. The film is not meant to be realistic or profound, but rather a popcorn flick that appeals to the masses. The film is worth watching for its spectacle, its humor, and its heart.
